When thrown in the household trash, batteries end up in landfills. As the battery casing corrodes, chemicals leach into the soil and make their way into our water supply. Eventually they reach the ocean.
Yes. LED light bulbs are to be recycled in the same manner as incandescent bulbs and halogen bulbs.
A. Have people and pets leave the room.
B. Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulbs (i.e. gloves, glasses).
C. Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder.
D. Place cleanup materials in a sealable
container.
E. Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials outdoors in a protected area until materials can be disposed of properly. Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors.
F. Air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door.
CFL bulbs (or Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs) contain a small amount of mercury. Each bulb contains about four milligrams of the toxic metal. Although that is only a fraction of the amount of mercury in those old school thermometers, broken CFL bulbs can be damaging to the environment if they enter landfills or the water supply.
